Riding the Year-End Spiral: Reflections From a Designer in the Creative Trenches

As we edge closer to the end of the year, I can almost feel the energy shift around me. The pace picks up, the briefs get bolder (and sometimes messier), and suddenly every project feels like it needs to be delivered right now. I call it the year-end spiral—that whirlwind of deadlines, creativity, pressure, pride, and caffeine that every designer knows all too well.

The Highs, the Lows, and the In-Between Moments

This time of year tests me in ways I almost forget about until the spiral hits again. There are the late nights staring at a screen, finessing pixels that no one else will ever notice—but I will. There are the "quick revisions" that end up rewriting entire concepts, the back-and-forths, the frustrated sighs, the moments where inspiration hides just out of reach.

But then there are the highs.

That electric spark when an idea clicks.

The message from a client who actually loves the work.

The moment a team member shouts, "YES, that's it!" during a brainstorm.

Those tiny victories, mixed in with the big breakthroughs, make the chaos worth it.

Celebrating Wins—Big and Small

Sure, we celebrate the big achievements: the campaigns that exceeded expectations, the pitch we nailed, the brand refresh that looks even better than we imagined. But I've learned to cherish the quiet wins too.

  • The colleague who reminds me I'm doing great—on a day I really needed to hear it.
  • The illustration that took me forever but came out exactly how I envisioned.
  • The meeting that didn't drag on.
  • The courage to try something new, even if it didn't make the final cut.

As a designer, I live in that space where tiny moments matter just as much as the headline achievements.

Looking Ahead: New Goals for a New Year

Once the dust starts settling, I always find myself reflecting.

What did I learn this year? Where did I grow? What do I want to do differently?

Setting goals isn't about crafting a perfect plan—it's about carving out a direction. Maybe it's experimenting with a new style, levelling up my skills, improving my workflow, or simply protecting my creative energy a bit better. I want to walk into the new year with intention, clarity, and excitement for what I'll create next.

Stepping Away to Be Fully Present

When the final files are sent and I shut my laptop one last time for the year, something softer takes over. I get to spend time with the people who matter most—family, friends, the ones who make all the hard work feel worthwhile.

I get to be present with them… and of course, be surrounded by presents too.

Sharing gifts, sharing stories, sharing laughter that doesn't require a Teams link or a Slack channel.

Those moments remind me that creativity doesn't only happen at my desk—it's shaped by the people, places, and experiences I step back into when work slows down.

In the End

The year-end spiral is loud, chaotic, inspiring, exhausting—and somehow grounding. I may just be one cog in a much bigger creative machine, but each brief, each pixel, each spark adds to something meaningful.

Here's to the highs, the lows, the lessons, the wins—and the precious pause at the end of it all.

See you next year, ready to create again.
